According to Sky News, up to 8 million job losses in the UK will be due to AI. Recent reports, such as the one from the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR), highlight this dooming figure. Jobs most at risk are those with the low-skilled workforce, who will bear the brunt of this technological upheaval. This transformative phase, often dubbed the first wave of AI disruption, places back office, entry-level, and part-time positions in the crosshairs, disproportionately affecting women and young people.

The Scale and Implications of Job Losses in the UK

The IPPR’s analysis sheds light on a critical issue: without government intervention, AI’s integration into work processes could impact up to 59% of tasks, equating to a staggering 7.9 million roles. This scenario signals a profound change in the socio-economic landscape. This could stagnate gross domestic product (GDP) growth if left unchecked.

However, the report also outlines a silver lining: if managed effectively through an industrial strategy focused on protecting key human functions and unlocking investment in training, the AI transition could boost the economy by as much as 13%, translating to an approximate £306 billion annual increase in GDP.
