Thanks to AI in recruitment, job hunting and recruitment have changed dramatically. Both job seekers and recruiters are finding themselves navigating a complex and often chaotic environment. Sending a resume is not enough anymore. You can find AI virtually everywhere in the hiring process.

The New Job Hunting Landscape

Most people don’t anticipate many hurdles when finding a new job after being laid off. AI in recruitment is adding some more layers to the process of finding a new job. This translates into needing more time to land one. Instead of interacting with human recruiters, AI chatbots often screen job seekers. Your long-experienced resume, formatted for a pre-pandemic era, proves incompatible with modern AI-driven recruitment platforms. However, you don’t need a costly update to make it AI-friendly, thanks to “You Lost Your Job. Now What? Surviving the AI Shift.” This book will guide you and teach you what to do and how to enhance your resume step by step with AI. Furthermore, it’ll also guide you on how to prep for interviews using AI.

This shift in how we recruit has created a novel and often bewildering experience for jobseekers, who must now contend with AI systems that screen and evaluate their applications. According to a 2022 Society for Human Resource Management survey, approximately 40% of large-scale employers have deployed AI in their HR processes, including recruitment. AI tools are being used to write job descriptions, assess candidates’ skills, power chatbots, and even rate candidates’ interview responses.

The AI Recruitment Ecosystem

Automation in recruitment is not a new phenomenon. Job sites like Monster and LinkedIn revolutionized the application process in the early 2010s, prompting companies to adopt applicant-tracking systems (ATS) to manage the influx of digital resumes. These systems evaluate candidates’ experience and education and rank them. Plus, using keywords, you can easily choose theoretically more skilled people. However, the volume of digital resumes has only increased, aggravating the challenges for recruiters.

AI aims to further lessen the burden on recruiters by automating more aspects of the hiring process. For instance, Unilever reported saving 100,000 hours and approximately $1 million in recruitment costs through the use of automated video interviews. Platforms like LinkedIn and ZipRecruiter now employ AI to offer personalized job recommendations and enable recruiters to generate job listings rapidly. The Google-backed startup Moonhub uses AI to scour the internet for suitable candidates, while HireVue offers video assessments analyzed by AI to gauge candidates’ personalities. The Big BUT of AI in Recruitment

Despite the promises of efficiency and cost savings, the integration of AI in recruitment has its detractors. Many experts and recruiters fear that AI could worsen existing issues within the hiring process. For example, AI’s reliance on keyword matching can overlook candidates with valuable but non-standard qualifications. Many times AI often fails to match candidates with roles accurately, particularly for positions beyond entry-level.

Moreover, the depersonalized nature of AI-driven recruitment can be alienating for candidates. AI increases the labor burden on applicants, requiring them to navigate automated interviews and complete complex puzzles. This process can feel dehumanizing, making it difficult for candidates to present their full potential. Besides, these add new layers to the hiring process!

Jobseekers have begun using AI tools to optimize their resumes and apply to numerous jobs simultaneously, creating an AI-versus-AI scenario. However, this approach can lead to poor-quality applications, overwhelming recruiters, and further complicating the hiring process. Fortunately, “You Lost Your Job. Now What? Surviving the AI Shift” teaches you how to use AI in a smart way and blend it with your human touch to make sure you’re not “spamming” HR departments.

The Impact of AI on Bias in Recruitment

AI’s potential to perpetuate biases in recruitment is a significant concern. Studies have shown that AI systems can exhibit gender and racial biases, screening out candidates with certain characteristics. The Berkeley Haas Center for Equity, Gender, and Leadership found that nearly half of the AI systems they analyzed exhibited gender bias. Similarly, AI can inadvertently de-rank resumes with names associated with minority groups, reinforcing existing inequalities.

Companies like Moonhub are implementing measures to ensure fairness, such as having human recruiters vet AI recommendations. However, achieving truly unbiased AI in recruitment remains a challenging goal.

The Human Element in Recruitment

Despite AI advancements, the human element remains crucial in the hiring process. Human recruiters are essential in understanding candidates’ motivations, addressing their concerns, and making nuanced judgments that AI cannot replicate. Recruitment should always be a human-focused process and AI should be used as a tool. And, as you know, how you use a tool is what matters! You can use it smartly or you can use it poorly.

What’s in Store?

We need a blend of automation and human oversight. Companies need to implement regular checks and updates to ensure fair and accurate hiring decisions. Additionally, ongoing training and development for recruiters on how to use AI tools effectively will be critical.

So, what about SMEs? While big companies have the muscle and budgets to invest in cool AI for their hiring processes, SMEs seem doomed to suffer AI more than benefit from it. However, we have some good news for you! dePepi is implementing a system on Notion that can help entrepreneurs grow into small companies and small companies expand further. Keep your eyes peeled during the next months and follow this space!
