AI in Recruitment: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly — My Course Saves the Day
Have you heard the latest in AI in recruitment? You might be the perfect fit for a job, but thanks to some fancy algorithms, you don’t even get a callback. Why? Maybe the AI decided your manner of speaking wasn’t posh enough or that your online cat pictures don’t scream ‘executive material.’ Or the highlighted skills didn’t use the exact synonyms the AI targeted. Welcome to the future!
Employers are now using AI for everything from video interviews to analyzing your social media profiles. It’s like having a robotic Sherlock Holmes scrutinize your life with a magnifying glass. And the fun part? You may never even know why you got the boot. (Or maybe you can imagine it but won’t like it).
It Gets Better (or Worse, Depending on Your View)
These AI tools might be slick, but they’re not exactly fair. They can filter out perfectly qualified candidates because they don’t fit the algorithm’s narrow view of the ‘ideal’ employee. They’ll choose the best option depending on how well your CV fits the information they were fed.
Let me give an example of what might happen on LinkedIn with some job offers. I’m pretty sure you’ve seen many offers that have the button for “Easy Apply.” Well, if you set up the offer with a set of skills that might be a synonym of what you’ve written on your profile, you might be automatically rejected!
Wait, what??
And you can add a mighty email to be sent to rejected prospects without you even needing to look at their CVs! (Just because the system can’t make any mistakes…)
I could set up “the one skill” you might be missing from your profile that might be a synonym of another word that describes the same! (There’s a limit of 50 skills to have on LinkedIn; I’m just saying.)
This might happen on LinkedIn, but if you’re a recruiter and have received over 800 applications, what do you think companies will use to filter such a tsunami of CVs? AI, that’s right!
AI in recruitment is making things more accessible and more complicated at the same time.
Candidate AI Talks to Company’s Recruiting AI
Many have resorted to letting AI craft their CV just by looking at LinkedIn and sending hundreds of CVs a day where the AI thinks you’ll have a shot. If you leave all the work to your friend, the AI, how will you use it beyond clicking a button?
Are there services that do this? Yup. (Have you ever wondered how suddenly you got “over 200” applications for a job that was just posted 20 minutes ago on LinkedIn? Do you really believe there are over 200 candidates just waiting for the right moment to send their resumes all at once?)
The Gamification in Job Applications
Imagine being judged on your ability to spot the differences in a cat’s mustache. Many candidates might struggle with certain games, not because they cannot do the job, but because they might have a disability (like peripheral sight problems).
Gamification isn’t bad itself, but overusing it. Do we really need to gamify everything we do? Including job applications?
